A disc image is an exact copy of the original disc that you are wanting to make a backup of and putting it onto the hard drive. It transfers the files and directories off the original CD to the hard drive exactly as they are on the original CD. It's similar to taking a snapshot picture of the disc and putting it onto the hard drive. If the original program disc that you are wanting to make a copy of has a write-protection feature on it, or has zipped files on it, a disc image usually will keep everything on the disc intact while transferring the information to the hard drive.
