Is the "head-to-tape-speed" the same as the "transfer rate?"

Answer:

"Head-to-tape speed" means "Search Time" from the head of the tape drive to search through the tape, and it depends on where the position the tape drive head is at and the tape length. Transfer rate is the write on the tape.

Normally for our tapes:
SDX2-50C (230m) = 120 sec. (Search Time) => Sustained transfer rate = 6MB/sec native (and 12/18 MB/sec with data compression)

SDX1-35C (170m) = 120 sec. (Search Time) => Sustained transfer rate = 3MB/sec native (and 8/12 MB/sec with data compression)
