What causes Symantec Backup Exec 11.d or 12.0 for Windows Servers to produce a Robotic Library Hardware Error on any operation with the Sony LIB-152 or LIB-302 Tape Libraries?
If you have a Sony LIB-152 or LIB-302 Tape Library configured with Symantec Backup Exec 11.d or 12.0 for Windows Servers. And you are attempting to perform any operation, such as an inventory, erase, label media, backup, restore, catalog, the library does not appear to function correctly, and an alert appears stating the following:
Robotic library hardware error. The robotic library has reported a general hardware error condition. Manual intervention, calibration, etc. may be required. This may be a device related hardware problem, or it may be some other hardware problem (i.e. SCSI card/bus etc). The issue occurs when the media attempts to mount and dismount correctly. Backup Exec contains a registry key that allows this device to correctly mount and dismount media.
To correct this issue start the Windows registry editor and locate:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Adamm
Set any of following registry key(s) to a value of 1:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Enable Robotic Library Tape Device Release
Enable Release Robotic Library Tape Device
--------------------------------------------------------------
Reset the tape library and allow it to become ready.
Restart the Backup Exec services and test the library.
