How do I select the folders/files that I want to record with CD Extreme?

Answer:

There are a few different ways to accomplish this. First, you must have the type of recording you are doing selected, such as Data Job, Audio Job, etc.

One way to select the files or folders is to click on Edit, and choose Add File or Add Folder from the drop-down menu. You are then able to browse for the particular file or folder.

Another method for selecting is to click on the folder or file icons (with a star on the icon). These are on the right side of the screen above the different recording options. You then browse for the appropriate file or folder.

A third method is to drag and drop files and folders into the list from an open window. For instance, if you have your My Documents folder open, you can click and drag an item from there into the CD Extreme layout list.

Can I run system tests, such as transfer and digital audio extraction rates, with CD Extreme software?

Answer:

Yes, you can run Data and Audio Extraction Speed Tests, as well as a Recorder Self Test with this program. To execute these tests, highlight the appropriate drive on the left side of the Sony CD Extreme screen. Click on Drive on the Menu bar and then Disc Explorer & Drive Properties. There are three icons located just above the CD Text button. Click on these icons to perform the various system tests. It is a good idea to test your drives before recording, especially if you plan to copy disc to disc.

Why won't my Sony CD-RW record at the highest possible speed using the CD Extreme software?

Answer:

There are several factors that can contribute to this. The most important are the source of the files you're recording, the drive you're recording from, and whether the information is audio or data.

If recording a CD from a CD-Rom or DVD drive to your CD-RW drive, the capability of the source drive will determine how fast you'll be able to record. If recording from the hard drive, you'll want to test its transfer rate. There are system tests in the software to test these capabilities. In most cases, copying from the hard drive will enable faster recording.

With audio CD recording, you may not be able to record directly from CD to CD at all. You'll want to record the audio tracks to the hard drive first. If you are using a USB CD-RW drive on a Mac system, the fastest you'll be able to record audio will be 2x. Recording audio at slower speeds will usually result in the best sound quality.

Data can usually be recorded at higher speeds than audio. The same factors apply for the source of the recording, however, CD-Rom and DVD drives can usually extract data faster than audio, yielding faster data recording.

The type of blank CD's you use can also contribute to the speed you can record at. Some brands of media are higher quality than others. Gold colored media is the highest in quality, with silver next, and finally blue. Check to see what speed the media is certified for. For instance, if the CD is only certified for 4x, you may not be able to record onto it at 8x.
