Veritas BE Win NT/Win2K Write and Read Time-out Issue with Win2K

Answer:
  • Problem:
Read command time-out is set for 3 minutes and Write command time-out is set for 6 minutes with bnt86idrv31_243823.exe / bnt86idrv32.exe patches. These patches were necessary for initial SONY SDX-700C and LIB-81/162 support. If these command time-out values are met the following error will appear in the Win2K Event Viewer System log:

Source: xxxxxx* Event ID: 9 Description: The device, \Device\Scsi\xxxxx*, did not respond within the timeout period.

    * WinK SCSI host adapter driver.

  • Symptoms:
A SCSI Bus Reset will occur so Win2K may report that the device has been disconnected / unplugged.

If there is Write command time-out the tape will be marked as bad. It could also be marked as cleaning tape. This is most likely due to the application not recovering very well from the SCSI Bus Reset.

  • Fix:
Apply the bnt86idrv36a_256251.exe patch. It will increase the Write and Read command time-out to 15 minutes. You can find bnt86idrv36a_256251.exe:

    http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/256251.htm

The Veritas .INF and the .SYS versions numbers remain the same so you will need verifier the driver file date:

    sonysdx.sys File Version: 5.1.1.1 Product Version 5.01 29.6KB 04/18/02
