Are Sony AIT tape drives compatible with the ATTO UL5D in a Intel-based MAC-Pro or X-Serve?
ATTO Tech Support has found that with the release of MAC OS 10.4.10, there has been a number of reported problems accessing tape drives with EMC Retrospect and other backup programs. These usually materialize as system freezes or backups hang. This has been reported mostly with LTO3 and Sony AIT-4 or AIT-5 tape drives, but may happen with other types also.
ATTO has implemented a work around for this in the OS X SCSI driver version 4.20 or greater. This driver is available on the ATTO downloads page.

Is the "head-to-tape-speed" the same as the "transfer rate?"
"Head-to-tape speed" means "Search Time" from the head of the tape drive to search through the tape, and it depends on where the position the tape drive head is at and the tape length. Transfer rate is the write on the tape.
Normally for our tapes:
SDX2-50C (230m) = 120 sec. (Search Time) => Sustained transfer rate = 6MB/sec native (and 12/18 MB/sec with data compression)
SDX1-35C (170m) = 120 sec. (Search Time) => Sustained transfer rate = 3MB/sec native (and 8/12 MB/sec with data compression)

Windows 2000 AIT Tape Driver
All Users:
Requires Service Pack 2 or greater!
If the user installs an unsigned driver for this web site, Windows 2000 will display a warning that the driver is unsigned, thus helping to preserve the integrity of the released system. However, by default, Windows 2000 does not block installation of unsigned drivers. This will allow Sony Electronics Inc. to get urgent fixes to customers while waiting for Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) to test the fix.
